Dr Luke Evans, Member of Parliament for Hinckley and Bosworth, was warmly welcomed by the Hinckley-based homelessness charity, Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland, on Friday 18 October.
Dr Evans, who has served as the Conservative MP for the Hinckley and Bosworth area since 2019, visited the charity to learn more about how they support people to overcome homelessness.
The team at Emmaus explained the charity’s unique model, which provides accommodation, personalised support, training, and work opportunities for up to 16 people who have experienced homelessness. The visit offered a chance to highlight the vital role Emmaus plays in the local community and also discuss broader political issues related to homelessness.
During the visit, Dr Evans spoke with people currently supported by Emmaus, hearing first-hand accounts of how the charity has helped them rebuild their lives. Each person living at Emmaus has their own room in the community home in Hinckley, with all living expenses and meals provided. The length of time someone stays with the charity depends on their individual needs, providing stability and the opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness.
Dr Evans also toured the charity’s Emporium shop on Stockwell Head, where donated furniture, clothing, and household items are sold to raise vital funds.
Commenting on his visit Dr Luke Evans MP said: “I’m hugely grateful to the team at Emmaus for welcoming me to their emporium on Stockwell Head in Hinckley to learn more about their work in our area.
“It was great to meet some of the volunteers and hear about what it means to them to work with Emmaus and be part of the community that the team have created in Hinckley.
“The Emmaus emporium is a treasure trove in the centre of Hinckley, brimming with furniture, clothes and books - do stop by and support them the next time you’re in the area!”.
Emmaus Director, Dawn Wright, said: “We were delighted to welcome Dr Evans to our charity. His visit allowed us to showcase the work we do to help people out of homelessness and emphasise the importance of long-term support. We truly appreciate having the support of our local MP as we continue our work to make a difference in the community.”
