Local bake sale raises £764.50 for Ukraine in just two hours and receives visit from Bosworth MP
Fundraisers at Hinckley Methodist Church have been hard at work raising money for Ukraine, in partnership with the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).
The ‘Cakes for Ukraine’ event held on the morning of Saturday 14th May at Hinckley Methodist church raised £764.50 in the two hours it was open. Proceeds from the sale of homemade cakes, crocheted hearts in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, cups of tea and coffee and sunflower pins – the country’s national flower – will go directly to the DEC.
Dr Luke Evans, MP for Bosworth, visited the bake sale to support fundraising efforts, speak with organisers of the event and pick up a crocheted heart and cakes for the weekend.
Jackie Payne, an organiser of the event, has been crocheting the blue and yellow hearts, sunflowers and ribbons onto pin badges for people to buy at the bake sale as well as in store at a local supermarket. Morrisons, Coventry Building Society and clothing store Hole in the Wall have the handmade creations on sale should any locals wish to contribute to the fundraiser.
After contributions from generous neighbours and G Seller & Co, a local funeral directors, the amount raised from the Cakes for Ukraine event and the sale of pins at businesses in our area now stands at over £1000.00.
Dr Luke proudly wore the crocheted heart in the colours of the Ukraine flag for Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 18th, when he asked Boris Johnson to support his body image campaign.
MP for the area, Dr Luke Evans said “It was a pleasure to be invited down to Hinckley Methodist Church for the bake sale and to meet everyone who has been working hard to raise money for people suffering in Ukraine. The cake was fantastic, there was a great atmosphere and the Church was packed with support.
“I have been bowled over by how much support people in this area are giving to our friends in Ukraine, whether it’s opening their homes to refugees or organising fantastic events like this. The sense of community in Hinckley and Bosworth is wonderful.”
Jackie Payne, an organiser of the event, said “I was feeling so helpless watching the horrors unfold in Ukraine and I knew I could bake, crochet and organise so I set about having a ‘Cakes for Ukraine’ event. Many people have expressed thanks at being able to do something and the morning was a lovely way to come together.
“The generosity and support of local people and businesses has been fantastic… although not surprising! I am absolutely delighted G Seller & Co have made a donation and brought the amount raised to £1000. I hope this makes a real difference.”
