This week I’ve met with other Leicestershire MPs to talk about the important issues facing our county in the coming years and how we can work together to lobby government to deliver the best solutions.
Leicestershire has historically been one of the lowest funded counties in the country and we talked about the need for fairer funding – not just for our local authorities but for the police, schools and hospitals too. I’m sure that these campaigns are ones that we will continue to fight for in the coming months.
We also talked in depth about the major issues affecting the west of the county, including my own constituency of Bosworth.
It’s important that we adequately consider the issues and challenges surrounding the Hinckley Rail Freight Interchange and its impact on the environment; I will be working closely with Alberto Costa, the MP for South Leicestershire on this issue.
Another topic which is understandably a major concern for local residents, and which I receive lots of post about, is congestion along the A5 corridor. I’m going to be working with all MPs whose constituency will be affected to lobby the Department of Transport to increase capacity along this key strategic route, and which will also enhance our local economy; the business case for improvements is clearly robust and we will continue to put the case to ministers to adopt it as a priority.
