Firstly,
Congratulations to Leicester City for winning the FA Cup!
It was fantastic to see supporters back in Wembley stadium 20,000 is a good start but when the capacity is 90,000, there is still a way to go.
On the back of this win, I used my question to the Health Secretary Matt Hancock, when we will know the results of the test event at the FA cup. You can watch the Health Secretary’s response here: Safe return of fans to stadiums- https://www.drlukeevans.org.uk/news/safe-return-fans-stadiums-question-…
On another exciting note, this week I hosted the first of 3 Parliamentary Export Programme events in conjunction with the Department for International Trade to provide support for local businesses on how to export and find international customers.
Bosworth businesses heard from panellists including a local exporter, an International Trade Adviser and an Export Finance Manager on the guidance and tools available to help to grow internationally, taking advantage of the new trade agreements across the world.
Currently 63 trade & continuation deals and counting!
Regardless of differing opinions on Brexit, we can all recognise how important it is to support our local businesses and take advantage of exporting opportunities to tap into demand for British products overseas.
This was the first of a three-part series, you can register for future events and learn more here: https://www.events.great.gov.uk/website/3734/
Moreover, my week consisted of:
- Met with fellow Leicestershire MPs with the Number 10 policy advisers where I raised issues about neighbourhood planning, Rail Freight Interchanges and concerns about fairer funding for Leicestershire.
- Raised with the Vaccine Minister the issue of booking a second vaccine appointment. Nationally there are enough vaccines to deliver within the 8 weeks for all over 50’s. I am pleased since I have reported it, this issue has been resolved and the NHS national booking website has been updated to enable those who are waiting for their second dose to book online, alternatively you can call 119. You can do this here: https://www.nhs.uk/…/coronavi…/book-coronavirus-vaccination/
- Attended the Health Select Committee where we heard the problems facing those with dementia and their carers.
- Heard from the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 to discuss how my constituents can become involved - if you would like to volunteer and join the Commonwealth Collective, applications open 1st June 2021. Register for updates to get everything you need to know delivered direct: https://www.birmingham2022.com/get-involved/volunteering/
- Asked two questions to the Justice Secretary; what steps his Department is taking to reduce the backlog of court cases, and tackling online fraud which I understand to be of concern to many constituents. You can watch the Ministerial response here: https://www.drlukeevans.org.uk/…/steps-reduce-court-backlog…
and here: https://www.drlukeevans.org.uk/…/tackling-online-fraud-ques… - Met with the Midlands Engine and the CEO of Hinckley and Bosworth Council to discuss how we can work together to recover economically post COVID
- To finish the week, held constituent surgeries to include: NHS pay rise, a boundary dispute and proposed planning application for a roundabout.
